A unique pedigree to take a deep dive with in this month’s Vicbred Wednesday Winner – Always B Miki two-year-old Crimes Of A Lady.

Western Terror mare Our Crime of Passion arrived in Australia from New Zealand in 2011 and commenced an impressive run of seven wins in a row and, after a fourth at Kilmore, added a further three victories, mostly at Tabcorp Park Melton.

She retired in 2014 with a dozen wins to her record including a 1:54.7 in the Mitty’s Pace Final.

Owned by Tony and Pam Coniglio, the mare was sent to the breeding barn with the result of her first mating being a colt to Sportswriter who went on to race as Crime Writer ($151,000; 1:54.9). To date, she has thrown seven foals; a weanling by Betting Line, a yearling full sister to Crimes Of A Lady and four others who have raced – all winners.

With the success of Crime Writer, it is no surprise that his full sister, Queen of Crime, went on to bank $125,000 and a Group 1 Vicbred win – but what was surprising is she made this record as a trotter!

Our Crime of Passion next produced two colts by Sweet Lou but only one made the track – Sweetpassion – who has two wins to his name and $25,000 in the bank after just eight starts.

The latest to the races is Always B Miki filly, Crimes Of A Lady, who took her maiden on debut in June at Kilmore with a 27.7 final quarter. This was the victory that won her owners their $7000 Vicbred First Win Bonus, but she has since created a 2-2-0 form line with another handy victory at Ararat.

Her pedigree reveals multiple appearances of some key sires on both paternal and maternal lines. A strain of Western Hanover on each (4 x 3); a 3 x 4 to Artsplace, a 4 x 5 x 5 x 5 to Albatross, 4 x 5 x 5 to Abercrombie, and a 5 x 4 x 5 to No Nukes.

Crimes Of A Lady’s granddam Queen Of My Heart was by a lesser-known son of Jate Lobell, in Go For Grins; the most successful of his small number of progeny to race in Australia was Sly Grin ($321,000; 1:53.8), who’s damsire BG’s Bunny also carries the Albatross line.

Her damsire, Western Terror, is proving to be as dominant in the sphere of broodmares as he was with racehorses.

The sire of multiple millionaires now has daughters whose progeny have earnt almost $6 million in Australia, chalking up 77 winners from their 108 individual starters.

Western Terror mares have produced four foals by Always B Miki, with Crimes Of A Lady the only starter to date, and, interestingly, there have been no Always A Virgin progeny of daughters by Western Terror. Her cross then is quite unique.

The introduction of Bettor’s Delight into the Our Queen of Crime family with the latest 2021 filly foal by Betting Line will be interesting to follow, though through Western Hanover there is still the presence of No Nukes, and through Cam’s Card Shark, a link to Abercrombie, though not so close as Always B Miki, Sportswriter or Sweet Lou who all produce multiple lines to these sires.

Our Queen of Crime has most recently returned a positive test to Somebeachsomewhere son, Poster Boy – although Artsplace is again closely replicated through his dam, the Mach Three and Beach Towel lines introduce more unique bloodlines again.

A Poster Boy foal of course will be eligible for the VicbredPure $12,000 First Win Bonus when it hits the track - it definitely pays to be Vicbred.
