Over several months, Harness Breeders Victoria have been working closely with Harness Racing Victoria to ensure that breeding activity is both protected and nurtured in the 2020 breeding season.
HBV have continued to consult with the finance and racing teams at Harness Racing Victoria to devise improvements to the Vicbred scheme, making it even more effective for Victorian breeders.
To this end, we are pleased that our input into this process has been honoured, and that breeders in 2020 will see improved economic benefit from their breeding activity through the HRV’s recently announced changes.

HBV President, Nick Hooper is very pleased with what has been achieved in concert with HRV.
“This is an important first step in the reform and further development of the VicBred program,” he said.
“Our aim is to improve the return to breeders through, amongst other things, continued increases to the First Win Bonuses. The current changes to the First Win Bonuses for foals conceived in the 2020 Breeding Season are intended to stimulate breeding. This is especially so for breeders in Victoria who support our best colts who are now standing at stud in Victoria. A $12,000 First Win Bonus is a substantial potential reward for those who do.”
The HBV committee have worked hard to ensure that breeders continue to be supported in what is likely to be a difficult season for many, and therefore ensure the viability of the industry at large.
This consultation has been undertaken in concert to a raft of other activities designed to assist breeders and help secure their investment, including the Breed To Succeed webcast series, and improved delivery of the much-loved Stallion Guide, already available as an interactive online edition and currently arriving in mail boxes.
Importantly, HRV have flagged further announcements to come around nurturing the Victorian breeding industry in addition to these significant changes to the Vicbred futurity program.
We greatly appreciate the support of our members in making sure our voice is heard at the planning table, and enabling us to deliver our wider program of support and recognition.
