February 2021 was a red-letter month for Aldebaran Park….both on and off the racetrack.

We had three Group successes at Melton highlighted by the spectacular wins of comeback hero Tornado Valley NZ (by SKYVALLEY) in the Group 1 Great Southern Star. The gelding hoisted a new track record and a fresh lifetime mark of 1:53.1 for 1720 metres winning the $50,000 elimination, then two hours later, zipped home along the passing lane to down the best trotters in commission in the $300,000 Final in 1:57.1.

Tornado Valley NZ has now won 37 races and $976,617 in stakes and is clearly the richest of his gait racing in the Southern Hemisphere at the present. His 21 victories at Melton is the most by a trotter.

On the same night, the SKYVALLEY NZ mare Aldebaran Poppy by Aldebaran Revenue, who was bred, raised and sold by Aldebaran Park at the 2015 Australasian Premier Trotting Sale, tasted Group success for the first time in the Group 2 $30,000 Aldebaran Park Vicbred Platinum Trotting Mares Sprint Championship Final.

The winner of three of her six starts this year, Aldebaran Poppy rated a career-best 1:59.7 for the 1720 metres trip and is arguably the most improved trotting mare in the country.

To cap a great month, 4yo mare Aldebaran Alissa NZ (Muscle Hill USA – Triple A NZ), owned by Aldebaran Park and raced on lease by Aldebaran Park, Peter Svanosio and Elizabeth MacLean, led throughout in a 1:57.7 rate to capture the Group 3 Lyn McPherson Memorial Breed For Speed Silver Series Final and Black Typed her pedigree for the Broodmare Barn later in life. It was her 4th win since crossing from New Zealand late last year.

Brilliant SKYVALLEY NZ mare Pink Galahs stormed home to finish a close second in the Group 1 $100,000 Australian Trotting Grand Prix at Melton, while the Aldebaran Park owned 4yo mare Rain Mist And Muscle NZ (Muscle Hill USA -0 a winner at Auckland on 12th February , ran second in the Group 3 Northern Trotting Stakes at the same track on 26th February.

The progeny of SKYVALLEY NZ cleaned up at the 2019/20 Awards Nights. Tornado Valley NZ captured the Australian Trotter of the Year and Aged Trotter of the Year titles for the second time, Pink Galahs was named 3YO Trotting Filly of the Year and All That Glitters, bred, owned and trained by Bronte Giorgio, was adjudged the South Australian 2YO Trotter of the Year.

Other SKYVALLEY NZ winners for the month were Valley Ess Jay (Menangle), Jennysfavourite (Bendigo) and Surely Not (Globe Derby Park).

Savvy Kyvalley (Andover Hall USA – Aldebaran Dream NZ), a 4yo gelding bred and raised by Aldebaran Park and sold at the 2018 Australasian Premier Trotting Sale, notched his first success at Geelong on 26th February.

Aldebaran Park was active at the yearling sales on both sides of the Tasman. We paid the top price of $76,000 AUD for a lovely Muscle Hill USA filly out of Swede Dreams SWE at the Australasian Premier Trotting Sale at Oaklands Junction and $50,000 NZD for a Father Patrick USA filly from Superbowlcheerleader NZ at the Christchurch New Zealand Standardbred Sale.

Aldebaran Park also had a very successful 2021 Australasian Premier Trotting Sale Premier Trotting Sale held at Oaklands Junction on 7th February 2021. We took 9 yearlings to the Sale and all sold above their reserves, with the Aldebaran Eagle USA yearlings keenly sought after. We congratulate all purchasers and we wish them every success both on and off the track.
